Depart is an independent notebook on contemporary and emerging art. The art world has a way of sounding like a members-only club, and a lot of that is on purpose. We write about the parts that get hidden behind the velvet rope: how a young artist actually builds a practice, how a piece travels from a studio floor to a gallery wall, and how anyone willing to stand still for a minute can learn to look.

The name is the argument: the work worth paying attention to departs from what came before it. We are an independent publication. No gallery, no inventory, nobody paying us to like a thing. We just write about art we find worth the trouble. More about Depart →
